thanks to Cris Monteiro for the help with pulling this together!

fellow POCA members,

Our cooperative has a new member benefit that directly affects day to day clinic expenses in a good way—-discounted sharps pick–up and delivery service!

Stericycle is offering all POCA clinics a 20% discount off of the ground floor price of your local service area. This is a good deal for any acupuncture clinic. What makes the relationship with Stericycle extra special is that they understand POCA’s staying power and want to do business with us over the long haul. With long term business relations in mind, Stericycle has offered a deeper discount POCA-wide once enough clinics are already using the service. So, sign up when your current sharps contract is over and compare pricing for this company. Let’s move toward a deeper discount in sharps services as soon as possible.

The folks at Stericycle have many aspects of their business that benefit POCA clinics.
• Strong leader in the industry of sharps management
• Whole business is focused on medical waste management and heath care compliance. This means Stericycle manages the disposal of acupuncture sharps as well as the OSHA requirements around blood borne pathogens in acu clinics. They stay up to date with all OSHA requirements so we can focus on patient care.
• The only sharps company in the US that services nationwide and owns all of their service facilities and equipment in each state. Your sharps truck driver lives where you do. Local ownership means supporting local business.
• Mail back sharps service is the best option for Nevada and Hawaii; yet, the vast majority of US states are available for sharps pick up service
• Price for service depends on the service area of your clinic

POCA’ s representative for Stericycle is Rick Barnhill. To get a quote for your clinic service area, call or email our POCA rep from Stericycle:

right on! I’m glad we have this started. POCA buying power is only getting stronger, so someday i picture having all basic supplies and even software, like POCApoint, discounted as a member benefit. For now, I can nerd-out on getting a better deal on sharps…

I have heard from a few folks that they are having trouble getting our guy to call them back. Has anyone tried emailing him? Is there a better method for being in touch, or should we expect a slow response time?

My original attempt to contact him was by email.  No response so far.

Sorry to hear the time lag for talking with our POCA sharps rep!

hopefully he is just busy signing other clinics up for new service…

In the last couple days a number of POCA clinics have posted on facebook or in this forum saying our POCA rep hasn’t responded in over a week to a phone call or email. I called and emailed him today to find out his best contact method and what the heck is up with the communication time lag so far. I also called another rep at Stericycle to check in with our POCA rep (since i couldn’t get him on the phone or by email in the past couple weeks either) and see if he was on vacation or just very busy lately. So, he should get back to me soon.

Our rep emailed me briefly today after my call to another rep and wrote that he has been in contact with 16 POCA clinics so far. That is a great sign and may simply mean he’s very busy. I hope so… I still asked him for how best to contact for potential POCA customers and why so late in responding to customer calls.

I’ll post when i know more…

just to update folks: As i said above, i emailed and called our sharps rep and he didn’t respond at all to why communication was taking so long, yet he did say he was in communication with 16 POCA clinics so far. He may respond later, but i’m not holding my breath. So, our rep is clear that people have been having a long wait for return responses and at least one of these folks said rep guy emailed back right after i mentioned that. So, let’s collectively give him a chance to do his thing and if any of you are still not getting any responses for long periods of time, post here and let’s decide whether to find another rep. Stericycle wants our business, so that part is clear.

I called Rick at Stericycle today and got him on the phone right away.

He told me that even current Stericycle customers can get the POCA discount, but they need to contact Stericycle in order to do so (Stericycle won’t give people the discount unless they ask for it).

So if you’ve already been using Stericycle, please be sure to contact them for the discount.

Is stericycle still offering this POCA membership benefit?  I called Rick back in January and while he did return my call within a day or two I haven’t heard from him since I sent him the info he requested in order to provide me with a quote.  I’ve left a voicemail and sent several emails with no response from Rick.  I *REALLY* want to support those businesses offering POCA discounts but Rick’s lack of response is making it incredibly difficult.  Ugh.

sorry to hear that Bob C! I called rick and left a message that you were hoping to do business with Stericycle through the POCA discount program. I gave him your name and spelled your last name out. I mentioned that you had a hard time getting a response recently and that you would take your business elsewhere if Rick didn’t call back. All the best.

Cris,
Neither my emails & calls or Moses’ call stirred up Rick Barnhill.  HOWEVER, I decided to take a different approach.  I entered my info on the Stericycle website as if I was a prospective customer.  I think it was within 24 hours that a different Healthcare Compliance Specialist, Tara Monroe, contacted me.
She was extremely helpful and walked me through the different services, pickup options etc.  Then she sent me a quote and I replied asking about the POCA discount which she had no clue about.  I told her that Rick B was supposedly our contact, but I didn’t hear from him for over three months and asked if she could look into it.
Within a couple of days, I received an email from Rick.  It was a reply to my series of emails to Rick indicating that he *did* get them!  Ugh.  Rick apologized in his email for ‘the communication gap’ and asked where I was located.  A subsequent email asked me more questions and being that I was pretty busy that day I quickly replied telling him to scroll down the thread of emails to see my answers from January (when he originally asked them & before he disappeared).  Although I didn’t say so in the email, I didn’t understand why he couldn’t/didn’t have access to all of the info I gave Tara or had the wits about him to look through our original correspondence for the answers.  I also didn’t want to go through that intake stage for a third time!!
Perhaps it was a bit childish of me to do that & he didn’t like my tone, but the bottom line is that for whatever reason I never heard from him again. I don’t want to say ‘Stericycle stinks’ simply because of one representative, but it does stink that the POCA contact there is prone to ‘communication gaps’. Hopefully other POCA folks are having better success with him.
