On Whispering in Our Clinics

I have a clinic that is so small, we whisper in the waiting/reception area.  Some time ago I found this and saved it, and now cannot remember where I got it!  But I'd like to share it with other Whispering Clinics.

Why do we Yell in Anger?

A sage asked his followers, 'Why people yell at each other when they are upset?'

The disciples thought for a while, ‘Because we lose our calmness,' said one. 'we

yell for that.'

'But, why to yell when the other person is just next to you?' asked the sage. '

Isn't it possible to speak to him or her with a soft voice? Why do you yell at a

person when you're angry?'

The disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the sage. Finally he

explained, 'When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a

lot. To cover that distance they must yell, to be able to hear each other. The

angrier they are, the stronger they will have to yell to hear each other through

that great distance.'

Then the sage asked, ' What happens when two people fall in love? They do not

yell at each other but talk softly, why?  Their hearts are very close. The distance between them is very small.'

The sage continued, 'When they love each other even more, what happens?

They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their

love. Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other and

that's all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.'

Then the sage said, 'When you argue do not let your hearts get distant, do not

say words that distance each other more, else there will come a day when the

distance is so great that you will not find the path to return.

    Wonderful imagery. Thanks for sharing.

    a unique benefit of CA

Beautiful Lumiel. And, it makes me realize that one of the benefits of CA (for both patient and practitioner) is the whispering. What might seem an inconvenience - the need to whisper - to the loud American persona,  turns into an opportunity to narrow the distance between two hearts, to become more intimate….with professional boundaries as my esteemed colleague Moses reminds me.

Doesn’t everyone need/want more intimacy? The usual health care encounter does not provide that - the vocalizations are much louder and abrasive in my experience. In Community Acupuncture, we get to whisper. How utterly delightful. And though at CommuniChi there is a wall and a thick door that stops most noise from travelling from the reception area to the treatment area, the habit seems to carry over anyways. People keep whispering…maybe even out the door into their suddenly more intimate, more heart centered, more self-loving, unconditional loving, lives.

    Exactly so!

You said:  People keep whispering…maybe even out the door into their suddenly more intimate, more heart centered, more self-loving, unconditional loving, lives.

Two weeks ago a new patient began treatment here.  He came back several days later and reported good results, and then he laughed quietly and said that he had gone home and told his son that he had just had acupuncture, and felt great!  His son asked, “Dad, why are you whispering?”

I really like this.  When i read it a couple months ago, and I have noticed that it has changed how I deal with people in ALL areas of my life…not just patients.  Thanks so much. smile

This also fits in with the whole liver yang/ loud voice connection from TCM….at least my teachers from China always said that people with really loud voices are livery.  So maybe when we whisper we soothe livers?  Maybe when patients speak in hushed tones they calm their liver and it is part of the treatment?

IT DOES LOOK LIKE THE CRAZY, DRUNKEN, PISSED OFF GENERAL (THAT IS THE LIVER) IS DOING THE TYPING NOW, DOESN’T IT?

    lol
