Speaking gigs and persistence

I thought it might be useful to talk about speaking since this is something most of us need to do as part of our marketing plans. Most people fear public speaking more than death itself. I have to admit I have an active dislike for it. I just joined a group called Local Business Network that meets twice a month. It is a networking group that actively seeks to get its members referrals and part of your obligation as a member is to get up and speak to your chapter members (about 15 to 20 people) and give a 60-second presentation of you and your business. I hate to admit it, but I still get palpitations as people are going around the room and it’s getting closer to my turn to talk. I don’t usually hear what the 3 or 4 people are saying who go before me because I am busy anticipating my own flummoxing and awkwardness. The more meetings I go to, though, the less time I seem to be wasting being anxious about my little spiel. I think the discipline of doing this once a week has been beneficial.

The chiropractor I share space with recently invited me to come speak to a group of students he teaches at the local college here, and my first reaction was ohmygod, no!!! I thought about it a while and decided to do it anyway. It took a lot of work trying to come up with a 60-minute talk to describe acupuncture and Chinese medicine to a group of students in a class called “alternative medicine,” but I think I pulled it off okay. There were 40 people in the class, so after the talk, I invited them to come to my clinic and experience a complimentary treatment for themselves. Twenty of them took me up on it, and I just saw one of them this morning. I guess what I’m saying is that I thought it was worth it to do the talk despite how anxious it made me feel.

I’m sure I’m not what people would describe as a good speaker, but I feel like it was good enough to get the word out about acupuncture and the clinic.

Tomorrow I’m doing another talk, this time for 30 minutes at a macrobiotic pot-luck meal for about 20 people. I’m still anxious, but I am looking forward to trying a new approach out on this audience.

There is a saying hanging on the wall in the chiropractic part of the clinic that I look at occasionally, and I wanted to share it because it makes me feel like yes, if I just keep at it long enough, this clinic is going to support my patients and me the way its supposed to; and maybe I’ll eventually learn to talk about what I do without being so clunky:

Press on.

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.

Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.

Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.

Education alone will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

This always makes me feel better because I regard myself as an average Joe-six-pack kind of individual who usually has to work very hard to achieve something. It’s good to know your hard work will eventually pay off!

    good for you!

Darlene, you are so right about the persistence thing. So much of success in any small business is sticking with it, showing up over and over, refusing to get discouraged. Your hard work will definitely pay off. Best wishes to you.

Thanks Darlene for your wise encouragement…the quote reminds me of something attributed to Mark Twain: “I never let my schooling interfere with my education.”

Cynicism is a smokescreen for laziness and fear. Clear light mind awaken! Pierce through all layers of doubt and delusion! Inspire me onwards in ceaseless waves of selfless activity.
